St. Mark's Square Pigeon Watch

My brother and me sat in St. Mark's square and put tally marks by different pigeons.

Date -  April 25, 2013

Time - 2:15-2:30 pm

Area - 4 meter square

Place - St. Mark's Square in Venice

We looked for 8 different kinds of pigeons
Blue-bar
Red-bar
Spread
Red
Checker
Pied white
Pied splash
White

This is what I found:

122 blue-bar pigeons
4 checker pigeons
3 red pigeons
3 pied splash pigeons
2 spread pigeons
1 pied white pigeons
0 white pigeons
0 red-bar pigeons

There were so many more blue-bar pigeons than any other type of pigeon in St. Mark's Square. When people stand by an area there are not as many pigeons that come to that area. But when people feed the pigeons, lots of pigeons gather there to eat!

Here are some of the photos.

  1. I love reading your blog and I think I just figured out how to write back to you! Can you believe all the pigeons on St. Marco's Square. I've never in my life seen as many as I saw there. Did you have any land on you? Did you feed them?

    1. Hi Mrs. Sevelle, Thank you so much for reading my blog. I can not believe the pigeons there! They came so close to you, like they were trained! None of them landed on me when I fed them because I stood up. There was a boy who had five of them on him and twenty of them around him! I had lots of fun in St. Mark's square.

  2. Hi Cate!

I loved, loved, loved Venice and St. Mark's Square! I didn't do any pigeon counting, though :) I enjoyed walking through all the small alley ways and visiting the many sights. I'm sure you have passed by the Bridge of Sighs, Doge's Palace, and St. Mark's Basilica.

I agree with you about the strange meats - I didn't try any either. I existed on pasta, pizza, and gelato. I'm pretty sure they cover most of the major food groups :)

I wanted to tell you we have brought back a scholarship award called the St. Francis Scholarship. $1000 will be awarded to a 6th or 7th grade student in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts. In order to be eligible, students must meet the following qualifications:
    • Conduct and work habit grades for the most recent two trimesters a B or above.
    • 90% or A- in the subject area for the past two trimesters.
    • Stanine score must be a minimum of 7 or above on ITBS in the subject for the current year.
    • Students must complete an essay at school.

And guess what??? You have qualified to apply for Science!!! I will email your mom the application. It's not due until May 17 but I wanted you to have the information now.

I can't wait to hear about where you will visit next. Thank you for keeping such a wonderful journal of your adventures.

    1. Hi Ms. Rolewicz. Thank you for writing on my blog! I can't believe I qualified for the St. Francis Scholarship in science. Thank you for letting me know. You and I would be good travel partners in Italy eating all of the pasta, pizza, and gelato!
Keeping a journal is fun because I get to put pictures, maps, and things in it that are very interesting to me. Most of what I put in my journal I put on this blog. We are in Paris now. We go to London on Wednesday and then we will be home on Sunday.

  3. Oh no, you are coming home already this week-end? It's not that I don't want you to come home, it's just been so much fun seeing all that you have been doing and hearing about all that chocolate and some of us have finally figured out how to write to you. Now we don't want your trip to be over.
